Chinese figure skating couple Sui Wenjing and Han Cong, who won gold at the 2022 Winter Olympics, held an event on Saturday to meet their fans and celebrate the 15th anniversary of their collaboration.

Sui and Han first met in April 2007 and have been through a lot together. They formed one of the most promising pairings winning titles at three consecutive World Junior Figure Skating Championships from 2010 to 2012. However, they had to overcome various difficulties such as body growth and injuries during the following years.

Missing out on a gold medal at PyeongChang 2018 was a blow to Han and Sui and put them under immense pressure as they prepared for Beijing 2022. When the two won the ninth gold medal of the Chinese team at the Capital Indoor Stadium on February 19, it was one of the most memorable moments in their career.

“Now looking back, everything seems to be the best arrangement,” Sui said. “We were the last pair to compete in the Winter Olympics. Every day of waiting hurt me. I’m so grateful to have won the gold medal with the quadruple twist. We put so much effort into practice it.”

Sui said her biggest regret was missing at least 10 spring festivals with her family. “I’m the happiest kid at home. My grandma wakes up early in the morning and makes me special meals. I can have braised tofu in soy sauce and fried honey mushrooms for breakfast. lunch,” she added.

Han said he has made great memories, made friends and met some great coaches over the past 15 years. “If there was any regret, it’s part of the sweet memories from when we won that gold medal,” he added.

The two have parted ways more than once due to injuries over the 15 years and those were some of the toughest times of their careers. Sui underwent ligament surgery in 2016 and has spent a long time recovering. “Before our first practice since coming back, the doctor told us not to exceed 10 minutes,” Han recalled. “But we forgot the time when we took hands and trained for 15 minutes. We were both so happy at that time.”

Han also underwent major surgery in 2020. “He could still visit me in the hospital after my injury,” Sui recalled. “But I couldn’t do that for him because of COVID-19. I also didn’t know when he would come back or when we could play again. I felt very depressed for a while. Every day was like a year for me.”

Han sees their career as the perfect example of “facing difficulties and overcoming them”. They shared a lot together, including exciting first victories as a young couple, all the hardships along the way, getting closer to the highest honor and finally winning it. They never backed down and became victorious in front of people at home.
