Security device violated in the center of Kuje – Aregbesola
Home Minister, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola has said that the tight security put in place at the correctional facility located in Kuje, Abuja was breached by the terrorists who invaded the facility on July 5, 2022.
Mr. Aregbesola revealed this to the National Assembly, during the resumption of the investigative hearing on the correctional attack on Kuje, by the Joint Committee of the House of Representatives on Security and Intelligence, Defense , military and police affairs.
The Minister, noted that the 65 security personnel comprising; Nigerian Army, Nigerian Police Counter Terrorism Unit, Kuje Police Division personnel; Nigerian Immigration Service personnel; The Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) and Armed Corrections Squad personnel deployed to secure the facility were adequately equipped.
He revealed that 106 inmates refused to leave the facility during the attack, while 28 inmates who left the facility returned voluntarily.
Chairman of the House National Security and Intelligence Committee, Mr Sha’aban Sharada, expressed concern that the attack which lasted for several hours met with no formidable resistance from the security personnel deployed to the facility and that there has been no adequate response from security forces agencies of the Federal Capital Territory.
According to him, the situation calls into question the efficiency and effectiveness of the entire national security architecture, given the location of their headquarters at the FCT.
Mr Sharada said the house had mandated the committee to carry out an investigation to find out the cause of the incident.
The committee also decided to send a final invitation to the Minister of Defence, Police Affairs, Chief of the Defense Staff, Chief of the Army Staff, Chief of State major of the navy, to the chief of air staff and to the head of the defense intelligence agency, who did not honor all the previous invitations sent to them.
