Security arrangements elaborated for the Chithirai festival
Madurai City Police have made elaborate security arrangements for the Heavenly Wedding at Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple and Lord Kallazhagar’s grand entrance into the Vaigai River.
A statement said the city’s police will deploy drone cameras and use CCTV cameras and binoculars on watchtowers to keep tabs on any anti-social elements.
City police will also use facial recognition software to identify criminals. The mobile application was installed on the mobile phones of all police personnel involved in providing security during the Chithirai festival. In addition, police personnel also sported body-worn cameras.
A total of 3,500 police officers from Madurai city and other districts would be deployed to provide security.
Devotees coming for Tirukalyanam at Meenakshi sundareswarar temple on April 14 should not bring any goods including mobile phones into the temple premises.
They would be allowed to enter the temple after the security check from 7 a.m. While VIPs, donors and government officials would be allowed through the West Tower, worshipers with ₹500 and ₹200 tickets would have to pass through the North Tower. For a free darshan, devotees must pass through the south tower.
After the Celestial Wedding is over, devotees can exit the temple through the north and west towers.
Although the number of COVID cases has decreased, as a precaution, worshipers have been asked to wear face masks. The municipal police distributed masks and bottles of water to the faithful.
As part of crime-fighting measures, police personnel were handing out safety pins to worshipers to attach their gold chains to their robes.
Vehicles with yellow passes would be permitted to park on West Aavani Moola Street and those with pink passes may park their vehicles on North Aavani Moola Moola Street.
Vehicles with blue passes should be parked on South Aavani Moola Street.
People without a pass can park their vehicle in Masi Sud and Nord streets.
For Lord Kallazhagar’s entry into the Vaigai River on April 16, vehicles with green passes can be parked at the AV Bridge.
Those with pink passes should be parked at the mini-bus station in Goripalayam.
Vehicles with blue passes should be parked at Anna Bus Stand and those without passes can park their vehicles at North Masi Street, Kuruvikaran Salai and Dr Thangaraj Salai, the statement added. .
Worshipers can call the Temple Police Control Room at 83000-17920 for any assistance.
Similarly, they can also approach the “Can I help you” stalls set up around the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple and along the bank of the Vaigai River.
