House Tour: A condo inspired by a renovated $195,000 luxury hotel on the east coast

Husband and wife Kirti Hariharan and Juthika Choksi Hariharan moved from Hong Kong to Singapore with their son, daughter and an aide in 2011.

The family had been living in a rented condo in the East Coast area for nine years when a unit in the same building, which is owned by OCBC Bank, came up for sale in 2020. They immediately made an offer.

“We always knew we wanted a four-bedroom unit because our kids are growing up and our loved ones are visiting us all the time,” Juthika shares. “Plus, each bedroom has its own bathroom,” adds Kirti.

The unit was officially theirs in November 2020 and they moved into the new home in April 2021 after a $195,000 renovation held at the height of the pandemic.

“It was a pretty efficient process, considering all the restrictions and delays,” says Kirti. The couple attributed this to the pleasant and collaborative working relationship with interior design company Parenthesis Studio, which they found by shortlisting a few companies published in Home & Deco Top class number.

A few details on the design brief include a place for an altar and a place for Kirti’s wine collection. There was also existing artwork and furniture to consider.

Both trained lawyers, Kirti and Juthika are passionate about art. “It’s collected, not organized. “It’s purely for personal enjoyment, not for investment,” Kirti says of their art collection.

That said, each element of the house has a story and is therefore precious to the family. Apart from these, the pair have given the Parenthesis team of design director Sujono Lim and designer Xinfang Koh free creative reign.
