“I don’t feel like I gave up,” Stenson said of the captaincy. “I’ve made every possible arrangement here to be able to fulfill my duties as captain, and I’ve had great help here from LIV to be able to do that.

“And yet, the decision has been made to withdraw. I’m obviously disappointed with the situation. But that’s how it is, and yes, we’re moving on now.”

Stenson refused to divulge details of the “private contract” he signed with Ryder Cup Europe when asked if he knew he would be stripped of his captaincy.

He said he learned of the decision following conversations with the team in which he explained that he would be joining LIV.

The 46-year-old didn’t deny that the lucrative financial rewards on offer played a part in his move to LIV, the second event of which saw winner Charl Schwartzel take home $4 million in prize money.

“I mean, I would say I’ve been a golf professional since the end of 1998, and the size of the purse, the prizes offered, the financial part has always been part of where we set our schedules and where we’re going to play. That was part of it, absolutely. It was no different in this case,” Stenson said.

Stenson stressed his desire for a conclusion to the uncertainty over the future of LIV Ryder Cup players.

“I obviously feel like it’s a shame that we’ve ended up in this situation, and I just hope that we can find a solution as soon as possible here for all the tours and everyone involved, and we can all coexist together,” he explained.

“Yes, all the players love the Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup. Yeah, it’s just a shame that we ended up in this situation. I hope for a quick solution.”
