WASHINGTON, May 23, 2022 /CSRwire/ – Located in northeast Washington, DC, the 915 kW rooftop community solar facility at the FedEx Express Eckington Place facility is one of the largest in the nation’s capital, with the capacity to generate electricity for the equivalent of 150 homes. Today, FedEx, along with DC-based solar developer Sol Systems, and local nonprofit SOME (So Others Might Eat) are announcing a special charitable agreement that extends the benefits of this solar project even further. community in the district.
FedEx allocates a portion of the electricity bill credits generated by the solar installation to the local association SOME (So Others Might Eat), which provides services to people experiencing poverty and homelessness in the district.
“Giving back to an organization like SOME through this installation elevates the spirit of community solar,” said Gina Adams, vice president of government and regulatory affairs at FedEx and longtime Washingtonian. “As part of the Ward 5 community, we saw an opportunity for FedEx to create an innovative returns program that benefits the environment and improves the well-being of our DC neighbors at the same time. We hope what we’ve done with SOME can inspire others to think about creative sustainability solutions in their communities.
“Having served Ward 5 for over 50 years, SOME is thrilled to partner with FedEx, our esteemed neighbor, on this industry-leading partnership that will result in significant savings for SOME. This budget relief initiative will allow SOME to redirect savings made in support of our direct services to homeless and poor people in our nation’s capital,” said Ralph Boyd, CEO and President of SOME. “We hope their inspired approach heralds a new wave of corporate nonprofit engagement in the DC area.”
The donated bill credits, in conjunction with an additional cash donation from FedEx, are intended to offset approximate annual electricity costs at two SOME facilities located in Ward 5: Isaiah House, a day program for those affected by homelessness and mental illness, and Weinberg House, an affordable housing building for 28 families.
“What FedEx is doing here exemplifies the very nature of community solar projects, which is exactly what Mayor Bowser and the Department of Energy and Environment are encouraging through programs like Solar for All,” said said Tommy Wells, director of the Department of Energy for the District of Columbia. and the Environment (DOEE), “and we hope more companies will follow suit: it’s a great way to support the community in which you do business”.
Installation of the solar project at this FedEx Express facility was completed in late 2021 by Sol Systems. Additionally, Sol Systems plans to match FedEx’s contribution for the first year and volunteer with SOME for the duration of the project.
“Sol has been a proud and committed member of the community since its inception in 2008,” said Yuri Horwitz, General Manager of Sol Systems. “We are excited to be providing solar power and generating tangible economic benefits for our local community with FedEx and SOME. We hope this initiative inspires others to follow FedEx’s leadership here.
Community solar projects generate power from solar panels which then feed into the district power grid to offset the electricity consumption of a number of customers, rather than just on-site consumption. In exchange for installing the solar panels on its roof, the FedEx Express facility receives credits on its own electricity bill and can apply a portion of those credits to another electricity user in the district.
In March 2021, FedEx announced its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040 and committed an initial investment of $2 billion in support of this goal in the key areas of fleet electrification, sustainable energy and carbon sequestration. Increased use of renewable energy sources in the electrical grid will help FedEx and other energy consumers reduce what is known as “Scope 2” greenhouse gas emissions generated by energy. bought.
